Never mind back-to-back beach days: there’s a profusion of local happenings to enliven a stay at Tom’s Cottage. Top or tailing days-out with a morning market, afternoon fete or evening brass band on the beach adds connection; deepens experience. Mingle and linger – the real fun comes with joining locals in fiesta-mode.
Some are family orientated; others lean more toward grown-up evenings. The majority are just highly entertaining (irrespective of age) and are unique. Watching gig crews row competitively in home waters is captivating, and the ice creams bought off the beach help float the boat – literally. When rowers hit the pub later with a thirst-on, merriment often leads to singing: shanty style.
Music runs through Cornish veins like the ore underground – even the tone-deaf (myself) sit spellbound through a male voice choir rendition. The song sheet helps of course: it’ll be stuffed with songs of Cornwall; or at the very least: sung to the Cornish tune.
High summer is also village season – shows, carnivals and fetes: community events that still hold fast hereabouts. Full of local character, good humour and totally uncommercialised. 100% authentic.
Then there's the biggies: recognisable as festivals in the conventional sense. Food, family fun and contemporary music on the banks of the Camel Estuary. Classical performances, acoustically enhanced in an ancient church, along with art exhibitions and fringe events.
Cornish culture is here, at grass roots level. Distinctive and best experienced first-hand; we’ve compiled a bucket full of memory-makers…
